The Oriole Sings for Me

I spend a considerable amount of time on our small, 7 x 9 deck.  It is 6 stories high, and lines up perfectly with a magnificent river birch tree. This tree is home to many birds. The first to arrive each spring are the orioles. Yesterday, on a crisp, clear Sunday morning, the oriole sings for me.

To hear an Oriole sing
May be a common thing ~
Or only a divine.

It is not of the Bird
Who sings the same, unheard,
As unto crowd ~

The Fashion of the Ear
Attireth that it hear
In Dun, or fair ~

So whether it be Rune,
Or whether it be none
Is of within.

The "Tune is in the Tree ~"
The Skeptic ~ showeth me ~
"No Sir! In Thee!"

Emily Dickinson

  4. Two years ago my boys built a double decker birdhouse. The first year, the chickadees came, a female for each level and only one male (gasp) who "visited" each house. (See.... even birds have sister wives) Then last year the bumble bees took it over.

This year, the chickadees moved in again, and this weekend Youngest and I watched as the bumble bee and the chickadee went head to beak for territory. It was quite funny.

    The bird won.

  5. I was thinking...wow what a poem, you go Shannon...then I saw the credit...So I guess instead of that I will say, wow what a find, thank you for sharing that poem...I have read almost no classic poetry so I like being exposed.

As far as what happened after my story, well I will take your advice and tell more :-)

How are you Shannon, I haven't had a chance to really check in with you...
